Autograph manuscript ship log kept by a midshipman in the Royal Navy; stationed on several ships, the author travelled from St. Simmons Bay, via Cape of Good Hope to Ceylon; thence to Bombay, and return to St. Simmons Bay; on another journey he voyaged to St. Helena, Cape Verdes, Portsmouth, Gibraltar, Lisbon, Malta and Greece. The log includes date, name of ship, origin and destination, coordinates and course, weather, wind, sails, and other remarks concerning daily activities such as cleaning, laundry, drills, daily prayer and worship, cargo, meals, and days of mourning, e.g. in the instance of drowning.

Richard Howe, Earl Howe, was born in London, England, on March 19, 1726, the son of Emanuel Scrope Howe (1699-1735) and Mary Sophia Charlotte von Kielmansegg (1703-1782). Around 1735, he joined the crew of the merchant ship Thames, and in July 1739 he joined the 40-gun Royal Navy ship Pearl .
